As previously reported, Kenny & Zukes SandwichWorks is officially up and running. Being somewhat of a sandwich whore, I booked a visit.
Let me first make an analogy: Blossoming Lotus is to chicks as SandwichWorks is to dudes. I love how gender plays itself out in the dining scene, and SandwichWorks is officially dude food in my book. Why? I was there in the heart of the lunch rush (11am on a sunny Friday) and the line was out the door, thick as mud with meat-loving men. I think I was one of four women in the landscape of about 30 customers in the place.
Speaking of the place, it’s quiet simple and small. The dining room is a few outdoor picnic-table style benches and tables. Lots of cement allows Ken and Nick to make their point clear: you’re there to get a good lunch or casual dinner.

And then there was a coffee company named Intelligentsia… with more barista championships than one can shake a stick at, these guys are easily at the top of their game. Needless to say, when I had 38 hours in Los Angeles, it was the numero uno place I had to go.
They opened their Silverlake coffee bar last summer, and my brother-blog and LA resident, Chocolate Meats admitted he almost cried when he heard the news.

Steamy tonics. Berry blends with granola. Belgium waffles and fried egg sandwiches… these are just some of the tempting offerings from the cutest cart in all of Portland. But calling it a cart, just doesn’t feel right. MoxieRX is more than a food cart – it embodies this town’s superior d.i.y. persona to a tee. It’s rustic trailer kitchen that added an adorable enclosed dining space just this fall. It’s complete with a bar, stools, a magazine rack and a closing door. The walls and roof are composed of a mish-mash of used windows, shutters, and basically any kind of flat surface you could put two screws into. The gravel floor still remains, and it’s definitely not warm, but it’s a lot nicer than being dripped on during Portland’s 300 days of rain.

Yes, they make this
Oh wow. The sammy scene in this town just got all the more incredible. Ken Gordon and Nick Zukin just announced the debut of their newest temptation:

I have a lot of little things to cover, from all subjects involved on this blog (me/living, Portland/food, and some random media stuff too).
I’ll start with the Fly on the Wall updates: If you’ve read this blog before, chances are it looked a little different last time. I’m afraid I lost some pretty good posts in the process of the transition, which (sigh) is just how this cookie crumbles. I am still tinkering with some changes, so don’t be surprised if it changes again soon.
Clips: I’ve had a few pieces up on Portland Food and Drink since my last update. Check out my thoughts on the US Barista Championships here, or read all about Kevin Ludwig and his bad ass new bar, Beaker & Flask. I also will have a review of the new Fischerspooner album out in the Summer issue of VenusZine. My brother foodie blog, Chocolate Meat, also published an essay of mine from my epic Mexican adventure.

Consider yourself warned. This is my longest blog post to date. Just in case you haven’t gotten enough media coverage about my adventure to Zihuatanejo, Mexico that I took back in March, here’s the epic tale in its entirety. Enjoy.

one:
On plane
It’s interesting to follow the path of my beverage choices while flying. I’ve flown somewhere in the hundreds of times, and I definitely have my drink stages. The earliest plane-drinking memory goes back to the Bloody Mary mix. I was swigging those before I even knew what the mix was supposed to be mixed with. That stage lasted from my young adolescence into my late teens. Then I jumped to the courageous sparkling water with a twist. Sometimes I’d own up to what it really is, and just order it as the boring “club soda with lime.” I’m always amused by the enormous bubbles that hug the sides of the plastic cup. Plus, half the time I feel nauseous, and the simplicity of this airborne cocktail comforts me. Continue Reading »
So, umm, whatcha think? I LOVE IT! YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HARD I’VE WORKED TO GET TO THIS MOMENT! Updating my blog has been a nightmare. More changes are on the way… stay tuned.
I still can’t believe it! Wow.
I’m salivating as a write this… I just got such a tempting e-newsletter, I have to share it along with some other delicious food-news bits. The overwhelming theme of this round of updates involves one of my favorite words: brunch.
Tastebud Does Brunch
This local-fare pizzeria has been on my list for a loong time, and they’ve recently had some pretty great press. Now the pressure to go is even higher since they’ve started doing brunch on Saturdays AND Sundays — oh hell yes. Here’s the menu In other yummy-Tastebud news, you can now enjoy their wood-fired bagels at select New Seasons Markets (aka. the coolest grocery store on the planet.) Look for ‘em at Concordia, Arbor Lodge, Seven Corners and Sellwood. Continue Reading »
Although 2008 is officially behind us, I’d like to select a few of my fav. lexicons of the year, and invite them to stick around in 2009.
1) Boutique (adj)
Definition: Unique, exquisite, specialty, limited
Example: Hilton is now attempting to open their very own boutique hotels.
Analysis: I don’t think we’re done with this one yet. As the local, d.i.y. mentality ages and spreads, more and more elements of the mainstream will co-opt it until the thought of being different and special fades into one of homogeneity—I don’t anticipate this happening any time soon. Wow – it’s been a while hasn’t it? Here’s a quick recap of what’s kept me off my own blog for so long: life is insane, then it gets taken up a notch with holiday madness, then it gets taken up five more notches while Portland gets buried under a few feet of snow for almost three weeks. I’m going to dodge the scores of weather rants in favor of discussing what I’ve wanted to post since the beginning of the month… homemade Oreos! Continue Reading »
